European Football Championships 2008

Hosted jointly by Austria and Switzerland, the European Championships 2008 kick off on 7th June, and finish with the final on 29th June.

16 Teams will compete for the title of European Champions from the following qualifying nations.

Austria
Switzerland
Poland
Portugal
Italy
France
Greece
Turkey
Czech Republic
Germany
Croatia
Russia
Spain
Sweden
Romania
Netherlands

Of the qualifying nations, Germany have won the title most times, being crowned champions on three occasions. Surprise winners from last time, Greece, also return.

The matches will be played in 8 cities, Basle, Berne, Geneva & Zurich in Switzerland and Vienna, Klagenfurt, Salzburg & Innsbruck in Austria.

This year a new version of the trophy will be used, although it is almost identical to the original design. The silver base has had to be enlarged to aid stability since the marble plinth has been removed. The names of previous Championship winners are now engraved on the back of the trophy having previously been on the plinth. The new trophy stands 60 cm tall and weighs 8 kg.
